  1. ReadMe for Enable ident and Disable ident AppleScripts for Mac OS X GM

  6. These AppleScript applications enable ident , or disable ident, for the user who needs 
  7. ident enabled to use Internet Relay Chat and do so without using the Terminal.
  8.  
  9. Some IRC networks like DalNet require ident to be enabled to chat.  They do this 
  10. to make their chat networks safer.
  11.  
  12. The Enable ident script enables the 'identd' program which provides the 'ident' service.

  15. Basic instructions

  18.     1. Enable the root user
  19.     2. Log in as the root user
  20.     3. Run either script
  21.     4. Restart your computer

  26. Detailed instructions

  29. 1. Enable the root user
  30.  
  31.     Launch the NetInfo Manager application from the Finder.  
  32.   NetInfo Manager is in the Utilities folder inside the Applications folder.

  34.     Authenticate by selecting from the menu bar: 
  35.   Domain > Security > Authenticate...  It will ask for a "Unix administrator's 
  36.   name and password" even though it's Mac OS X.  The name and password for 
  37.   this are the name and password of the 'administrator' used when initially 
  38.   installing Mac OS X.

  40.     Enable the root user from the menu bar:  
  41.   Domain > Security > Enable Root User.  You will be asked to create a password 
  42.   for root.  Choose one that will be difficult for anyone to guess.  Using a 
  43.   combination of letters and numbers and making it at least 8 characters long
  44.   is a good idea.

  46.     Deauthenticate by selecting from the menu bar: 
  47.   Domain > Security > Deauthenticate.

  49.     Quit NetInfo Manager.

  53. 2. Log in as the root user
  54.  
  55.     Logging out:
  56.   Log out from the Apple menu.  This is logging out of the normal 
  57.   administration account.  This will quit all running applications.

  59.     Logging in as root:
  60.   Username is root, password is the password set in step 1.

  64. 3. Run Enable ident

  66.     Double-click on the Enable ident application and follow the instructions.

  70. 4. Restart the computer

  72.     Restart the computer by selecting 'Restart' from the Apple menu.

  74.     When it starts up again ident will be enabled.
  75.  
  76.     Log into your computer using your normal Administration account,
  77.  i.e. the one originally set up when Mac OS X was installed, not as root.  The account
  78.  used to log in will be shown as the identity on IRC.  If it is root it will most likely 
  79.  make the user a target of various attacks.  In fact, it is best to disable the root 
  80.  user with the NetInfo Manager after enabling or disabling ident (see step 5).

  84. 5. Disable the root user

  86.     This is very similar to enabling the root user.

  88.     Launch the NetInfo Manager application from the Finder.  
  89.   NetInfo Manager is in the Utilities folder inside the Applications folder.

  109.   The Enable ident script will not modify anything if the configuration file is 
  110. missing or if the line of text as supplied by Apple is missing from it.
  111.  
  112.   The Disable ident script will not modify anything if the configuration file is 
  113. missing or if the line of text as changed by the Enable ident script is missing 
  114. from it.

  116.   Error # -5000 "Network file permission error" will occur if the user is not 
  117. logged in as root.  This is normal.  Go back and log in as root.
